Emerging Conflict Over the Arctic
By Rowan Wolf
As the sea ice melts in the Arctic, conflict heats up over who it belongs to. The Russians wasted no time at all in sending a submarine to to plant the flag on the ocean floor.

With the apparent success of yesterday’s Live Earth concerts, one has to ask whether something new is being born. It is reported that the broadcasts reached 2 billion people. That is almost one-third of the population of the planet. If accurate, that is HUGE. Certainly, a third of the planet should be more than a critical mass to DO something.

There needs to be a call to action. Big Coal (like Peabody Energy Company aka Peabody Coal Company) is pushing hard to get us (via the government) to make massive investments in coal, and coal to liquid fuel legislation. The plan is to take our current estimated 250 year supply of coal and use it as a liquid fuel to replace imported oil. Imported oil makes up 60% of the oil used in the United States. This plan is so stupid on so many levels that it is difficult to know where to start.

The United States has seen the chickens coming home to roost regarding the consequences of a globalized and industrialized food supply. The issue arose in relationship to animal feed. It started with a recall of dog and cat food because it contained a toxic mix of additives (melamine and cyanuric acid) which resulted in the illness and death of thousands of family pets across the country. It then spread to contamination of hog and chicken food as (apparently) both the recalled pet food, and the same adulterants in other feed, was shipped across the country. Then it spread to feed for farmed and nursery fish.

Just as the Dubai Ports World fiasco (1, 2, 3) brought to public attention that the US has ceded control of our ports to international corporate control, the pet food contamination has brought to the fore problems with globalization, our food supply, and the ineffectiveness of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Those of you who have been following my coverage of this story know that I predicted this was going to be a very big story. Well it is growing by leaps and bounds.

While it has not been added to the US list of problematic ingredients, there was an article today from South Africa of renal failure in dogs and cats due to melamine in corn gluten. While the food was processed in South Africa, the gluten - once again - came from suppliers in China. This would place on the danger list wheat, rice, and corn gluten and concentrated vegetable protein from any of these sources.

In 2004 I wrote an article Environmental collapse - sooner not later. In that article, I discussed the Pentagon’s scenario (as discussed by David Stipp) that we could find ourselves in the middle of a rapid onset ice age. I have a feeling that we may be moving in that direction.

In 1997, Wallace Broecker warned that the Oceans’ circulation could collapse. Further, that within a ten year period, the winter temperatures could plummet by 20 degrees. The article notes:
Each time the Conveyor has shifted gears, it has caused significant global temperature changes within decades, as well as large-scale wind shifts, dramatic fluctuations in atmospheric dust levels, glacial advances or retreats and other changes over many regions of the Earth, he said.

I attended one of Shell’s “National Dialogue on Energy Security” town halls on October 27th. This is part of a 91 city tour by Shell President John Hofmeister and a few staff to have “discussions” across the nation. Portland, Oregon is one of Shell’s “markets” and was stop 14. It was interesting and informative, though not necessarily in the way Mr. Hofmeister intended.

Kinky Friedman is running for Governor of Texas as an “independent.” This is fitting because Kinky hangs out with Willie Nelson and Jesse Ventura. And he is famous as the singer and songwriter of “The Texas Jewboys.”It might be accurate to describe Kinky as a cultural libertarian and an economic populist. He favors decriminalizing marijuana and medicalizing the drug problem. “Texas has more people in prison than Alaska has inhabitants.” And he is right about that ghastly fact. Texas, the Lone Star State, is quickly becoming the Lock Down State.
[Note: Kinky is a great candidate, but he needs our help! He is running against the two major Parties, and independent contributions keep his campaign running. For more information on what Kinky thinks, click here (http://www.kinkyfriedman.com/issues/) .
